I was at my Gram’s house one summer, one of her bantam hens (the black & white barred ones) sighted a red-tailed hawk swooping low, and gave a special call which made her chicks scatter & hide – but she was pissed off – she flew and chased the hawk about 100 yards. The hawk was flying a bit panicked – it was clearly thinking “WTF??? Is this a chicken??? What’s going on?”
The bantam hen flew back and was clearly strutting – obviously proud of protecting her chicks. She didn’t fly high – maybe no more than 15 feet off the ground, and for only about 100 yards out and 100 yards back – so I’d say that chicken flying is more an effect of slective breeding for more meat than an evolution thing.

Can’t fly, but they can sure do a mean power glide… the second panel is classic!
Beat me to it, Sandy…panel two rocks. This one will go over GREAT in Kansas!

Keep trying, Cock! Don’t listen to the system!
If God had meant chickens to fly he would have given them wings.
Wait…scratch that…
these last few have been surprisingly action-packed! Love the extra evolution comment, nice tie-in.
If you like action, then just wait until Sunday….
Jay, that’s awesome! And I bet you’re right about the breeding. That makes a lot of sense, actually.
